VAT History

The 69th Cask Legend

In 1882, William Sanderson embarked on a unique journey of whisky creation, vatting 100 casks and inviting a panel of friends to taste them blindly. The unanimous declaration that the 69th cask was the best birthed the iconic name, VAT 69. Sanderson’s influence expanded as he bought into the Aberdeenshire distillery of Glen Garioch and co-founded Edinburgh’s North British distillery in 1885, breaking DCL’s near monopoly on grain whisky.

From Prohibition to Popularity

Post-Prohibition in 1933, VAT 69 soared in popularity in America following a merger with Booth’s Distillers of London. In just four years, both entities became integral parts of DCL. The whisky found its way into films like Our Man in Havana and gained notoriety as the preferred choice of Bollywood villains in the 1970s. Across the Atlantic, it became synonymous with Capt. Lewis Nixon in the TV series Band of Brothers.

In the world of blended Scotch whisky, VAT 69 is not just a libation; it’s a testament to craftsmanship, history, and a journey that transcends time. Elevate your spirits with the legacy of a blend that has stood the test of time, celebrated in every sip.
