Kyperounda Andesitis – Red Dry Wine from Cyprus
Kyperounda Andesitis is a characterful Cypriot red dry wine from the Limassol region, created from a carefully selected blend of international and local grape varieties. With its vibrant, deep purple colour, expressive fruit-forward character and well-integrated tannins, this wine offers an excellent balance between richness, freshness and structure. It brings together Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and the indigenous Lefkada grape, resulting in a distinctive blend that reflects both modern winemaking and Cyprus’s unique viticultural heritage.
The 2021 vintage combines 40% Shiraz, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Grenache and 10% Lefkada. Each variety contributes something different to the final wine. Shiraz adds depth, aromatic intensity and generous fruit character, while Cabernet Sauvignon brings structure, complexity and firm tannins. Grenache contributes elegance and finesse, and Lefkada adds colour, floral and herbal notes together with lively acidity.
Rich Fruit and Balanced Structure
On the nose, Kyperounda Andesitis is distinctly fruity, with prominent aromas of red-fleshed fruits complemented by subtle botanical notes. On the palate, it delivers good concentration and density, while its integrated tannins provide structure without overwhelming the fruit. Furthermore, balanced acidity keeps the wine fresh and lively, leading to a pleasantly fruity finish.
This combination makes Andesitis an approachable wine in its youth while also giving it the structure required for further development. When stored correctly, the wine can benefit from approximately 4–5 years of ageing, allowing its flavours and aromas to evolve.
Careful Winemaking and Barrel Ageing
Following harvest, the grapes remain for 12 hours in refrigerated chambers, bringing their temperature down to approximately 15°C before processing. The grapes are then destemmed and crushed before being transferred to red-wine fermentation tanks. Extraction of colour and tannins takes place alongside fermentation for 9–14 days.
After fermentation, only the free-run wine is collected. In addition, part of the wine matures for six months in French and American oak barrels of 225 and 300 litres. This careful process helps develop greater depth and complexity while preserving the wine’s fresh, fruity character.
Food Pairing and Serving
Kyperounda Andesitis is particularly well suited to grilled meats and hearty dishes featuring cooked red meat. Its fruit concentration, acidity and structured tannins make it an excellent partner for steaks, grilled beef, lamb and traditional meat-based dishes.
For the best expression of its aromas and flavours, serve at 14–15°C.
